5Best Tank Stripping/Coating Kit Available
By TripleEight
This kit is amazing. It includes everything you need to do this job right. The process is very messy and time consuming but that is expected with a tank repair kit. The inside of my newly coated CB77 tank looks like it's brand new. All instructions are included and easily readable and easy to follow. They are also in a .pdf document on the POR-15 website. POR-15 is a very reputable rust repellant brand. If you actually follow the directions, you cant go wrong with this kit. It's worth the money.

5Best kit on the market!
By Victoria Gay
This is absolutely by far the best product on the market! I have an older bike and was having problems of old lining and rust going through my fuel line and getting stuck in the carb. Thus resulting in my float sticking and draining all of my fuel on the ground. I purchased the POR-15 HD kit and followed the instructions exactly.
I was very impressed with the first step the removal of the old liner. WOW!!!
This is going to be the ONLY kit I ever buy to line any of my tanks and I have quite a few bikes.

3Good product. Inadequate instructions!
By Chamomile
I have a BMW R100GS motorcycle that has a large, complicated saddle shaped tank with two petcock openings. I used neoprene stoppers on the two petcock openings and a freeze plug for the gas cap opening and was able to seal the tank very well.

I called the manufacturer to make sure the neoprene stoppers would be OK and to ask about protecting the outside of the tank. I had seen where others had used a thin coat of vaseline and then applied plastic wrap to the outside of the tank. It seemed like a good idea but when I asked I was told not to do it. I went ahead and did it anyway and am glad I did. It caused no problems whatever and gave a lot of protection to the painted exterior of the tank. I highly recommend it. The vaseline comes right off with soap and warm water, I removed it just before the final rinsing.

The instructions want you to seal up the tank to hold the various solutions and well you should but this causes a problem. There are times whe n the pressure inside the tank becomes great enough to blow out a stopper and you better hope your face isn't in front of it when it does. The worst times for pressure build up are when you are using the stripper and whenever you add hot or warm water to the tank for rinsing. The air inside the tank expands and will QUICKLY build pressure. I highly recommend using one of the stoppers to carefully release the pressure away from your face. Add the stripper or hot water and immediately start to relieve pressure every few seconds until less pressure is being generated. At some point it will be obvious you no longer need to release pressure and you can leave the stopper in. There should be a big warning about this on the instructions but there is not. Also, the stoppers get degraded with all this use and the chemicals being used. I suggest you have extras available.

If, God forbid, I should ever have to do this again I would buy the kit without the stripper POR-15 Cycl e Tank Repair Kit and go out and get a gallon of Strypeze (I've also heard that muriatic acid works better) and I would be more aggressive. Some suggest using small screws to help the stripper scrape off the liner, a very good idea. I avoided this and wasted time and stripper. The liner is tough to get off! I would use a lot of stripper (half gallon) with a little water to help it flow around the tank (it's a gel), use the screws, and leave it in for hours giving it an occasional shake. Be sure to quickly release pressure at first, or just don't seal it until the initial reaction subsides.

Use nitrile or latex gloves, eye protection and old clothes, it is a messy job. Plan on devoting an entire day, it could take that long. Drying is crucial, be sure to have a hairdryer on hand. I ran the dryer on low heat for half hour intervals for several hours before the tank was really dry. Then I let it set for a few days just to be sure.

The last step, coating th e inside of the tank with the liquid liner, should be the easiest. Apparently there are two types of cans, one with clips that are easy to remove and then you open the can like any ordinary paint can. The other has no clips, that is the one I received. It is, I believe, impossible to open in any conventional way. I eventually gave up and punched two holes in it, one to pour out of and one to allow air in.

This is probably one of the best products available but I can only give it 3 stars due to the inexcusable lack of adequate warning concerning the buildup of pressure and danger of chemicals being blasted about. Be Careful! Also there are no instructions for dealing with the can from hell that must be punctured in order to pour the liner out. How hard would it be for POR-15 Inc. to include adequate instructions? I guess they really don't care.
